From Weight Loss to Cancer Prevention

The benefits of GLP-1 have been in the headlines for months for their impressive weight loss results but a recent study shows they may also play an essential role in preventing cancer. 

It is well known that people with obesity have an increased risk of several types of cancer.  This is due in part to the fact that their Natural Killer cells are defective. 

Natural Killer cells are immune cells that play a critical role in the initial attack against abnormal cells.   They are best known for their ability to kill cells infected with viruses and early cancer cells.  By destroying these cells in the early stages they prevent them from spreading.

A recent Irish study (https://healthnews.com/news/ozempic-restores-cells-capable-of-battling-cancer/) found that in people with obesity that were treated with Ozempic (semaglutide) had a significant improvement in the function of the Natural Killer cells.  This improvement was seen even without any weight loss.  

Of course, more research will need to be done but this is exciting news and another benefit to add to the list of this class of medications.
