Adding Little Bits of Exercise into a Busy Schedule: 4 Tips to Stay Active

Maintaining an active lifestyle can be challenging amidst our busy schedules.  It can be hard to find time just to squeeze in the necessities of each day much less time for exercise.  It can often seem like a luxury instead of a routine part of our lives as it should be. The great news is that you don’t need a ton of time to make a difference.  Instead of focusing on a chunk of time several times a week try these tips and focus on adding micro workouts into your day.

Embrace the Power of the Micro Workout

When time is limited (and when isn’t it?), micro workouts are your best friend.  Instead of waiting for an uninterrupted hour, break your exercise routine into shorter bursts.  Aim for a few five to 10-minute sessions throughout your day. You can perform quick exercises like squats, lunges, jumping jacks, or even a short brisk walk during your lunch break.  These micro workouts add up and provide all the same benefits of regular exercise without compromising your schedule.

Make the Most of Technology

In this digital age, there are numerous fitness apps and online resources available to help you incorporate exercise into your day.  Whether it’s a 7-minute workout app, a guided yoga session, or a fitness tracker to monitor your daily activity, technology can be a valuable tool and motivator for staying active.  Try out several different apps and or websites that offer quick workouts and see which ones you like best.

Make the Most of Everyday Activities

Find opportunities to make everyday tasks more physically demanding.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car farther away from your destination, or choose to walk or bike for short trips instead of driving.  By incorporating small changes like these, you can burn extra calories and increase your overall activity level throughout the day.

Schedule Exercise Breaks

Intentionally schedule exercise breaks in your daily agenda, just as you would for any other important appointment.  Treat these breaks as non-negotiable and stick to them.  It could be a short yoga routine in the morning, a brisk walk during your lunch break, or even a few minutes of stretching and mobility exercises in the evening.  By setting aside dedicated short exercise appointments with yourself during your day you’ll not only be investing in yourself but you’ll also be fitting it in seamlessly into your busy schedule.

Incorporating exercise into a busy schedule may seem challenging, but with a little creativity and intentionality, it’s entirely possible.  Remember, every little bit helps!
