How Long Does It Take for Semaglutide to Suppress Appetite?

Well, it depends.  I am Michelle Clay, a Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in medical weight loss with prescription semaglutide (and tirzapetide).  Patients often wonder how long it will be before they start noticing their appetite is reduced.

The answer varies, but let me explain my approach and the reasons behind it.

Starting Low and Going Slow

I believe in starting patients on a low dose and increasing it slowly. This method is beneficial for several reasons:

1. Preventing Gallstones: Rapid weight loss can lead to the formation of gallstones, which can cause infections and might require surgical removal of the gallbladder.

2. Avoiding Pancreatitis: Even those without a gallbladder are at risk for pancreatitis with rapid weight loss.

3. Maintaining Metabolism: Rapid weight loss can cause the body to lower its metabolism, making it harder to lose additional weight.

4. Preserving Muscle Mass: Slow weight loss helps ensure that more fat is lost rather than muscle mass.

5. Reducing Side Effects: Starting with a low dose typically results in mild or no side effects, allowing patients to adjust to the medication, tolerate it well, and stay on treatment.

I also like for my patients to lose weight slowly so that they have time to implement other healthy habits so that they can enhance their weight loss efforts and ultimately be able to maintain their weight loss long term.

When to Expect Appetite Suppression

With this approach, it often takes about a month for patients to notice a significant reduction in appetite.  But not always!  Some patients are very sensitive to the medication and notice an appetite reduction with the first one or two doses.

Setting Realistic Expectations

I always strive to give my patients realistic expectations so they know what to expect. By understanding the gradual process, patients are better prepared for their weight loss journey with semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Remember, everyone's body responds differently, but with patience and the right approach, you can achieve lasting results. If you have any questions or concerns about your treatment, feel free to reach out to me.
