From Struggle to Success: An Interview with Marcia and Her Weight Loss Journey with Semaglutide

Meet Marcia, my sister-in-law, and my first patient in my weight loss program. Marcia’s weight struggles began 14 years ago after undergoing a hysterectomy due to cancer.  At the same time, she was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism which further complicated her ability to manage her weight.

What sort of things had you tried before to lose weight before taking weight loss injections?

I tried all the over-the-counter stuff, every diet you can think of, I even had lap band surgery. But the lap band made me sick all the time, so I eventually had it removed. Diets like Keto worked temporarily, but the weight always came back.

When did you first hear about the weight loss injections?

I saw a doctor talking about it on TikTok. I thought it was interesting but didn't think much about it until I kept hearing more about it. Then you mentioned you were considering it, and I wanted to try it too.

Were you hesitant to try the injections?

No, I was ready to go.

Did you experience any side effects initially?

Sometimes I felt nauseous, especially if I wasn't careful about what and when I ate. I also felt a bit tired the next day after taking the shot. But these side effects lessened over time.

How did you manage these side effects?

I learned to be careful about what I eat before bed since digestion slows down at night. I make sure to wait 3 to 4 hours between my last meal and going to bed.

Do any particular foods bother you?

Not really, I just learned that I had to eat slowly to avoid feeling too full.

How soon did you start seeing results?

I could tell some difference in the first week, but it became more noticeable after about a month as the injections built up in my system.

How much weight have you lost overall?

I've lost about 56 pounds.

Wow, that's impressive! Are you at your goal weight yet?

Not yet. I’d like to lose another 30 pounds or so.

What habits have you changed or developed since starting the injections?

I’m definitely more mindful of what I eat and how much I eat. I’ve realized I don’t need as much food to feel full and healthy. I also make sure to avoid eating too close to bedtime.

Do you find that good food tastes better now?

Oh, yes. I crave vegetables and fruits more now, and I'm not as interested in sweets or meats.

What are some of your non-scale victories?

My clothing fits better, and I feel more confident. A teacher at my school even called me "skinny," which was a big deal for me. I also feel better about myself overall.  I am also able to be more active without getting winded.

For those considering the injections or just starting, what advice would you give them?

I would say to not be afraid of the side effects. They are usually mild and temporary. The benefits far outweigh any discomfort. It’s worth investing in your health.

How do you feel about the cost of the injections?

It's worth it. Compared to the money wasted on ineffective over-the-counter pills, the injections are a good investment. They can potentially prevent serious health issues like diabetes or heart disease.

What motivated you to be so determined this time?

I've had two cancer scares and they were a huge push. I knew being overweight increases the risk of cancer, so I was determined to get healthier.

Marcia's story is not just about losing weight; it's about regaining health, confidence, and a new lease on life. Her journey can inspire many others to take control of their health and embrace the changes needed for a better, healthier future!
